This is a joint honours course, where you study History alongside History of Art. Our History course makes the past come alive with high quality teaching by world class historians. Research-active tutors will enable you to critically appreciate the dynamics of change and stability, and apply your understanding to the histories of Britain, Europe and beyond. The historical setting of Oxford also provides a wealth of excellent resources and inspiration for academic study. Our History of Art course enables you to combine the study of artistic creativity with a wide range of academic skills. You acquire a broad knowledge of Western art between the 15th and 20th centuries as well as more detailed knowledge of specific periods. Oxford has outstanding resources in its museums and galleries, including the Ashmolean Museum and Christ Church Picture Gallery. Final-year students also have access to the world-renowned Bodleian Library and the history-of-art-focused Sackler Library. Tutors are active researchers with strong reputations and are regularly involved with major exhibitions.

In the History element of the course, what you study includes: Year 1 gives you a broad overview of the topics and issues from the 16th century to the present. Year 2 compulsory modules are complemented by optional modules covering a range of subjects including imperialism, crime and medicine. All Year 3 modules are double credit modules. Coursework takes many forms, from book reviews and web blogs to group projects and a dissertation. In the History of Art element of the course, what you study includes: Year 1 has six modules covering skills, issues and debates in the history of art and architecture from the Renaissance through to the Modern period. Years 2 and 3 give your studies a period focus by offering options from the 15th to 20th centuries such as Oxford Buildings or Anthropology of Art. Year 2 also includes a study trip to Paris. Year 3’s dissertation module will allow you to work in depth on a topic of particular interest to you.
