Course Summary

The Foundation in Law is a one-year diploma at Level 3 with progression to the LLB in Law. It will offer opportunities for study at Oxford Brookes to different categories of students whose success in Higher Education will be enhanced by Level 3 study that will facilitate their transition to Level 4 by providing a grounding in the academic and critical skills employed in the LLB as well as providing an introduction to the intellectual concerns of a law degree. The programme will draw upon the teaching and research expertise from the School of Law. It will provide students with the opportunity to develop key legal skills (statutory interpretation, case reading, journal reading, problem solving, and oral skills), whilst also developing core competency in legal research and writing. It will be one of the few Foundation Law diplomas made up entirely of law modules and taught by School of Law staff, including those with nationally and internationally recognised research and teaching profiles. It will also include an innovative Criminal Advocacy module dedicated to building students’ confidence in oral skills and introducing them to criminal procedure and rules. This module will make use of the School of Law Moot Court room. The two research modules will take advantage of the expertise of research active members of staff with national and international expertise in current areas of law. Most of the teaching will be provided by two Teaching Fellows with a particular expertise and experience of teaching at Level 3.
