Our Equine Science and Thoroughbred Management course is the only degree of its kind in the UK.
We teach this course in partnership with Abingdon and Witney College. Most of the teaching is here at Oxford Brookes, with some sessions at the college's stud farm at Witney Campus.
Our partnership with the Common Leys stud means that you will put theory into practice. You will:
- spend time with thoroughbreds as you learn about anatomy and genetics
- see youngstock reared and sold from the stud
- deepen your understanding of what makes a good racehorse.
Raising thoroughbreds is a billion-pound international industry. As a result there is a demand for highly qualified professionals. Possible careers include:
- Racehorse Manager
- Horse Breeder
- Stud Farm Manager
- Equine Occupational Therapist
- Horse Trainer
- Academic.
Course Details - Modules
You study a range of compulsory modules in Years 1 and 2 to ensure a thorough grounding in all aspects of equine science and thoroughbred management. Year 1 modules include equine breeding and stud practice, international thoroughbred industry, equine anatomy and physiology, and skills for life scientists. Further in-depth study in these areas during Year 2 will help you make an informed choice of where you might best spend your third-year work placement. Year 3 will be spent at a thoroughbred institution of your choice either in the UK or abroad. Our students have worked at racecourses, at equine rehabilitation centres, with bloodstock agents, in large veterinary hospitals and at international thoroughbred breeding centres. In your final year, optional modules, together with your dissertation project, will allow you to develop specialist knowledge in a chosen area.
