This is a joint honours course, where you study English Literature alongside Communication, Media and Culture. English Literature offers the opportunity to study an exciting range of modules, blending the study of classic texts and literary traditions with current theoretical models for understanding literature as a dynamic, global phenomenon. Our course is renowned for its inspirational teaching and research excellence. In the 2013 National Student Survey (Source: Unistats), 93 per cent of students agreed that staff had made the subject interesting. This course enables you to address the key communication, media and cultural issues in contemporary society and develops your skills as an effective communicator. It is structured around the three key themes of communication, media and culture. You can specialise in one theme or engage with all three, according to your interests and career ambitions. Oxford is a media and communications hotspot. It is home to numerous cultural institutions, has a flourishing new media industry, and is one of the world's leading centres for publishing.

In Year 1 modules include Culture, Criticism and Literature, World Literature, Critical Theory, Shakespeare, Understanding Communication, Understanding Media, Understanding Culture, and Academic Literacies. In Year 2 there are modules in American Literature and Culture, The Literature of Space, The Novel and Modernity, Culture, Crime and Transgression, Communication, Culture and Organisations, Critical Media Literacies, Design for Online Communication, and Intercultural Communication. In Year 3 there are specialist optional modules offer intensive, small-group teaching, designed to build on the work you have done in Year 2. In addition, you will choose either the Contemporary Literature (Synoptic) module or the Dissertation Module, working one-to-one with a specialist lecturer.
