Course Summary

This programme offers you the opportunity to study the dramatic arts in one of the UK’s most culturally vibrant cities. You will develop a broad range of acting and technical skills, explore the theories and methodologies of performance, and learn how to work with dramatic texts on both page and stage. You will be taught both on Oxford Brookes’ campus and at the Old Fire Station professional theatre in the centre of Oxford. Working with a team of dedicated lecturers, technicians and theatre practitioners, you’ll develop your skills in acting, directing, devising, and technical production whilst also gaining a solid grounding in theatre history and performance theory since the Renaissance. You’ll see how considering plays and theatre conventions from different periods and thinking about different critical approaches to performance can inform your own work as contemporary actors and theatre-makers. What makes this programme distinctive are (1) its focus on the dramatic arts as a stepping-stone into employment across a wide number of professions, and (2) its socially conscious ethos that drama is a transformative medium that can improve the lives and wellbeing of those who access it. These emphases on employability and the social value of the arts are woven together throughout your study journey and aim towards producing graduates that are socially active, self-aware, informed and tolerant citizens of the world.
