How To Become a Smart Meter Installer

You can get into this job through:

College / University

You could do a college course to learn some of the skills you need for this job. Examples include:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Gas Installation
  • Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation
  • 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent, for a level 2 course
  • Apprenticeship

    You could do an intermediate apprenticeship as a dual fuel meter installer.

    Day To Day Tasks

    In your day-to-day duties you could:

    • visit customers’ premises
    • remove the existing meter
    • fit the new smart meter
    • carry out tests to make sure the meter is working
    • explain to the customer how to read the meter and how to get the most from it

    Working Environment

    You could work at a client's business or at a client's home.

    Your working environment may be outdoors in all weathers, you'll travel often and cramped.

    You may need to wear a uniform.
