So this degree combines a thorough grounding in economic analysis with the study of theory and practice of politics. Offered in conjunction with the School of Political, Social and International Studies, you'll gain high-level training in economics alongside detailed insight into political science. By mastering both political and economic inquiry you'll be able to draw more wide reaching predictions and recommendations in answer to questions such as how to manage the trade-off between social welfare and levels of taxation. **Overview** Whether you are interested in business, politics or simply how the world ticks, economics is a wonderful discipline for understanding how individuals make choices, how those choices create markets, and how markets interact to create national and global economies. It also provides the essential understanding for how economic policies can be developed to improve social welfare. In Year 1 you will undertake the year-long module Introductory Economics, where you will engage with key concepts in both macroeconomics (understanding consumption, savings, inflation, interest rates, monetary and fiscal policy, and the global economy) and microeconomics (individuals’ and households’ consumption and saving decisions, firms’ output decisions, analysis of markets, externalities, asymmetric information, and strategic interaction). You will also be taught economic modelling techniques and statistical techniques and can choose from optional modules from the School of Political, Social and International Studies. Year 2 will focus on strengthening your understanding of the macro and micro-economy, with further optional modules of your own choosing. In Year 3 you will choose one economics module, plus optional modules from a broad curriculum of economic and political disciplines according to your own personal interests.
