Course Summary

The Foundation degree (FdA) in Tourism and Event Management is a two-year course that aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding of the sectors. The first year of the course is focused on development of skills development in all disciplines where students will participate in lectures, seminars, group work and guest lectures from sector related specialists - Academic Development 1 - The module introduces students to a variety of skills that are intended to support their transition into Higher education and enable students to adapt to what is expected of them as an undergraduate student. People Management - The aim of this module is to enable students to understand and apply principles of human resource management. The module will explore the tools and techniques used in human resource management. Understanding the Tourism and Event industry The aim of this module is to provide students with an overview of the Tourism and Event sectors and be able to outline the jobs within the sector.  This module also looks at current affairs within the sectors and the impact these forces have on the industries. Work Related Learning 1- the module aims to develop students understanding within the sector and to identify what employers require from graduates and the career paths that are available. Digital sales and marketing - The main aim of the module is to familiarise students with the ever-enhancing digital world and the leading advances taking place in the digital sales and marketing sector. The module will provide students with practical skills through a live brief from an organisation in the industry or a case study to evaluate the current digital sales and marketing provision and present potential ideas. Business Finance - The module aims to provide the students with the opportunity to explore the sources of funding available and the range of income streams that organisations should source. It will also allow the student to understand, calculate and produce a series of financial statements that organisations are required to produce annually. The second year of the course allows students to apply the skills and knowledge gained in year 1 of the course and to choose optional modules (via a voteable process) to put the skills and knowledge into action via practical modules. Students will also participate in a sector related work placement (minimum of 40 hours), which will enhance employment opportunities - Global Tourism and Events- The module aims to provide the students with the opportunity to explore the growth and history of the travel, tourism, and event industries. Students will analyse one destination and critically evaluate the impact of this growth. Academic Development 2- This module aims to raise the higher education skills of the students to enable them to undertake some analysis; compare research methods; develop critical thinking skills and evaluate the transferable skills they have developed whilst studying the event sector. Live event for the Tourism and Event sector -The purpose of this module is to develop the students’ competence in group work and oral presentation and to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to research, plan, implement and evaluate a live event. WRL2- The aim of this module is to enable students to engage in a meaningful industry work placement, thus developing their personal and professional skills, through engaging in practical tasks and activities within an appropriate work-based setting. The minimum work experience hours required for this module are 40 hours. There are four optional modules - Retail Tour Operations; Legal and Risk Issues; Entrepreneurship live and Special Interest Tourism.

Standard Qualification Requirements

Standard entry criteria: You will hold a relevant Level 3 qualification (A-Level/BTEC) with a minimum of 32 UCAS points You will hold four GCSEs at grade 4 or above (A*-C) You will be required to hold a grade 4 or above in GCSE maths and English, or to have demonstrated ability in maths and English (such as key or functional skills). The above is normally evidence through a personal statement and/or supporting references and an interview. Evidence of non-certified learning normally refers to demonstrating at least two years in full-time employment in a relevant organisation. You will be required to demonstrate a commitment to study GCSE maths and English alongside the programme if needed.

Non-standard entry criteria: If you are aged 21 by the 31 December on the year of admission and do not meet the criteria above, you will be considered on an individual basis.
