Molecular biology underpins modern life sciences and looks at how macro-molecules like proteins and nucleic acids can help solve biological problems. This allows us to test biochemical theories on a small, controlled scale before adapting them into real-world solutions.
At Levels 1 and 2, you’ll study a range of life sciences topics before focusing on areas including microbiology and gene regulation and expression at Levels 3 and 4.
Gaining a strong understanding of key theories, from the molecular level right up to full body systems will help you understand the field as a whole.
Your first two years of study will introduce concepts like evolution, biological organisation, molecular mechanisms and processes. You’ll develop practical laboratory and data analysis skills, and learn to design and run experiments. This will prepare you for carrying out projects later in your course.
Our course curriculum is shaped by the work of our world-leading researchers to make sure you’re learning the latest advances, as well as gaining an understanding of the fundamentals of the field. You’ll pick modules that interest you and may also be able to transfer to one of our other life sciences courses if you choose the relevant modules.
Laboratory sessions throughout your degree will help integrate theory and your practical skills meaning you learn about all aspects of the field and develop strong transferable skills, both in and out of the lab.
