Course Summary

The Fine Art and Crafts programme introduces you to a breadth of media, skills, materials and processes, initially through specialist workshops, and then through further development and application of these skills in your individual studio space. The studio is also a place of dialogue, sharing and extending your ideas and practice through discussions with students and staff. You will explore the theories that underpin the historical and contemporary context of Fine Art and Crafts through lectures and personal research, with the aim of understanding your own practice within this broader context. Our learning resource centre houses a vast range of specialist books, journals and e-resources to support your studies. We also provide study skills workshops to ensure that you can access this resource confidently. Gallery and studio visits provide a direct connection with the work of other artists. Fine Art and Crafts has an important and vibrant role to play in the promotion and extension of creativity within business and the community. You will work on live project briefs that have been commissioned and will have the opportunity to exhibit. This programme will help you develop many personal and employability skills such as self confidence, independent thinking, creative problem solving and communication methods. Our graduates go on to develop themselves as artists and crafts people within independent or group studios, they continue to exhibit, engage with community art groups and projects, and promote and sell their own work. Many graduates have gone on to further study at postgraduate level, including Masters in Fine Art and Art Therapy, and Teaching qualifications in either the post compulsory or school sectors.
