Course Summary

Dynamic and forward-focused, this degree provides you with practical research skills and critical perspectives to set you up for a career in media. You will be taught by experts in media, television and cultural studies, as well as experienced practitioners in PR and new media. Designed with employability in mind, the course covers both the theory and practice of media and communications, e.g. media discourse, television studies, photography and video, and global subcultures. Graduates have progressed into diverse careers in sectors such as PR, journalism, marketing, entertainment, international relations, politics and education. You can start your study of Mandarin at DMU at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level, through a 30-credit module which will equate to two hours of language classes and one hour of cultural studies per week. You will have the opportunity to: - benefit from DMU’s strong links with local media partners including BBC Radio Leicester, community media organisations and Leicester’s independent arts and cinema complex, Phoenix Cinema. These close links can provide opportunities for work experience in real-world settings and cultural connections alongside your studies. - access our creative technology studios, including editing suites, TV and radio studios, dark rooms, blue and green screen studios and video production laboratories. - contribute to DMU’s own student media group Demon Media, with the chance to produce content for multimedia platforms including a magazine, radio station, YouTube channel and website. - expand your horizons with our international experience programme DMU Global. Students have delved into media archives in New York and learnt about Berlin's fascinating media history. Our Communication, Cultural and Media Studies ranked joint first in the UK for the proportion of its research outputs rated as ‘world leading’ by the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014). We also offer Media and Communication with French: P3RX.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Students are taught through a series of one, two or three-hour lectures, seminars/screenings and tutor supported workshops. In addition, students can also arrange one-to-one meetings with staff which enables you to receive personal or small-group support for assignments, to discuss career paths, or simply to develop topics discussed in class. Assessed work will make demands on your academic, critical and creative skills and includes essays, analytical portfolios, scripts, news articles, online work, research tasks, presentations, and practical projects. Students may be required to work both individually and in teams and in doing so will build industry-relevant skills. Students have access to a full range of student support services including the Centre for Learning and Study Support (CLaSS) and a dedicated careers service. The Mandarin module focuses on language competence/skills classes and a ‘cultural awareness’ class each week which introduces history, culture, institutions, politics and literature. You will take a 30 credit module which will equate to two hours of language classes and one hour of cultural studies per week, learning about the country and its people.
