Course Summary

Mathematics BSc (Hons) at De Montfort University has been designed to meet the demand in industry for skilled mathematicians and statisticians. The course will allow you to develop the technical and practical skills to use mathematics to solve problems in the workplace. You will be taught to use industry standard software, and you will also be given scenario based projects, allowing you to develop your logical and analytical thought processes to solve real life problems using computing techniques. The knowledge and technical experience gained will enable you to enter a wide range of careers in areas such as mathematics, statistics, operational research, computing business and education. Mathematics was awarded 100% overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2018 and 100% of Mathematics graduates from summer 2017 are in work or further study after graduating, according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) 2016-17 report.

Course Details – Assessment Method

You will be taught to use professional software such as Minitab, SPSS, SAS and Matlab, and you will work on scenario-based examples allowing you to apply mathematics and develop professional skills via written reports, laboratory assessments and verbal presentations. You will normally attend around 12-16 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and can expect to undertake at least 24 further hours of independent study such as reading around the topic area to supplement your lecture notes, completing tutorial work, computer laboratory exercises and coursework.
