Learn the theory and practice behind the fascinating and influential world of journalism, while broadening your expertise by studying Politics as a joint honours course. You will be taught by a team of experienced subject experts with a range of relevant professional, industry and creative expertise. You will have the opportunity to: - gain insight, knowledge and understanding of the role politics plays at local, national and global levels, as well as developing core skills in researching, interviewing, writing, web-publishing, and video and audio production. - develop your practical and professional journalism skills in our dedicated newsroom - contribute to DMU’s own student media group Demon Media, with the chance to produce content for multimedia platforms including a magazine, radio station, YouTube channel and website. - expand your horizons with our international experience programme DMU Global. Students have gained insight into the rapidly changing world of newspapers at the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong and analysed the impact of the cold war in Berlin. DMU is the only university in the UK to hold both Congress to Campus and European Parliament to Campus with former members of US Congress and former Members of European Parliament to enhance your study experience. Our Communication, Cultural and Media Studies ranked joint first in the UK for the proportion of its research outputs rated as ‘world leading’ by the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014). Your precise timetable will depend on the Joint Honours subject and optional modules you choose to take; however, you will normally attend around 12-16 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and can expect to undertake at least 24 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research. We use a variety of formats in our Politics classes. In the first two years, you attend weekly hour-long lectures and seminars in which you discuss the issues raised in lectures. In the third year, teaching is in a two-hour workshop format where you often get to decide on the topics that are debated. You are assessed through assignments, essays, exams, class presentations, seminar contributions and your dissertation. You will also be challenged through simulation games, problem-solving exercises and online collaborative projects.
