English Language with TESOL at DMU allows you to combine the study of English Language with the key theoretical and practical issues involved in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The course is designed to enable you to develop your own ability to teach English to non-native speakers whilst enabling you to think about how language in general and English in particular functions in the world today. You will study linguistics, grammar, the evolution of the English language and a variety of writing styles, while also exploring the theory of how to teach English as a second language. You will develop a set of linguistic and analytical skills, which will help you become a highly-skilled communicator. In the final year you will have the opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge into practice with our work placement module. **Key features:** * Develop specialist skills in communication and presentation in order to become an effective teacher, and have the opportunity to investigate the theoretical and conceptual issues involved in teaching written and spoken language. * Gain life experience by practising your language skills and networking in a different culture, with the opportunity to study abroad between years two and three. * Develop transferable skills ideal for employment opportunities in both the UK and abroad with the skills gained on this degree providing career opportunities interacting with, influencing and inspiring others. * Students have previously gained experience in the community and helped local children by volunteering for paired reading schemes with our DMU Local programme. * Experience showcasing opportunities by putting your theoretical knowledge into practice with our final-year placement module. * Learn from specialist teaching by experienced practitioners; ensuring the skills you develop are current to professional practice. * You can get involved with a number of societies that are relevant to your studies, including creative writing and debate societies. "Overview: This degree will make you aware of the full resources of language, and help you learn to use them to the full, in any situation. From the beginning of your course, you will be developing a knowledge of how language functions, and increasing your own skills of analysis and self-expression, while your TESOL work will focus on the acquisition of key skills and knowledge of teaching in general, and the teaching of English to non-native speakers in particular. Later years offer a range of courses blending theoretical and applied knowledge and skills, a final year work placement module and the opportunity to study material such as propaganda and interrogation, pragmatics, the mechanics of meaning, psycholinguistics and psychotherapy. This degree is centred on language and communication, and the acquisition of tools and theories that will help you, and other people, communicate more effectively. Contact hours: You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (e.g. presentations, essays and reports). Your precise timetable will depend on the optional modules you choose to take, however, in your first year you will normally attend around 10 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week, and we expect you to undertake at least 25 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research."
