Course Summary

Live, study and research surrounded by British endangered and protected species such as golden eagles, ospreys, red squirrel, Natterjack toad and red deer. Plus, a range of ecosystems and habitats that no other university can offer. Our course - designed by professional zoologists in consultation with wildlife trusts, consultants and Government bodies will boost your hands-on skills and teach you everything you need to become a professional in the field. This course offers a four-year 'sandwich-route mode' of study, which will allow you the opportunity to undertake a one-year placement between your second and third year. You'll get the real world experience you need to put your studies into focus. **Why Choose University of Cumbria?** If you want to become a zoologist, then what better place than surrounded by the unique and ecologically diverse habitats of the Lake District, the Pennines and the Solway Firth as your outdoor classroom? You'll get an excellent understanding of British wildlife and the pressures it faces, because we are one of the few courses where you can become an expert in its identification, a skill which is in great demand with potential employers. - Train in wildlife monitoring techniques with the kit used by professionals (which you can borrow to pursue your own interests) - Study in stunning new laboratories with cutting-edge technology and methods used throughout the professional world - Learn from academic tutors who are active zoologists and vets with close links to the industry, and internationally-renowned researchers - Our strong links with animal and wildlife conservation organisations in the UK and abroad provide you with excellent work placements, volunteering opportunities and job prospects - Take part in exciting placements, studying anything from brown bears to snow leopards and dolphins - The opportunity to do voluntary work alongside organisations such as Cumbria Wildlife Trust, to boost your CV and gain hands-on experience with a wide range of species e.g. adders, dragonflies, butterflies and birds - Conduct your own research in Africa and the UK (you can also get involved in academic tutors' scientific studies!) - Field work opportunity to the Gambia to work with critically endangered species - Practical-focused course so most of the time you’ll be doing zoology hands-on (for example only 10% of the assessment in 1st year is by written exam) You'll be located in the historic city of Carlisle within easy reach of the Lake District National Park - now a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Pennines, the internationally-renowned Solway Firth and mountains of Southern Scotland. So, you can explore and research around our unique location to your heart’s content. Even the Carlisle campus gives you inspiration with the River Eden and its tributaries less than 500m away with breeding otters, kingfishers, osprey, salmon and lampreys. The site is so rich it is recognised as a Special Protected Area in European legislation and a SSSI in the UK. If you aspire to be a zoologist, this course will enable you to do just that.
