Your journey to becoming a qualified architect begins here on our fully validated and accredited BA (Hons) Architecture course, taught at UCA Canterbury. We provide a lively, progressive and creative experience - from the outset you’ll be designing new buildings and considering the world around you. Throughout the course, we'll challenge you to become highly skilled in technical drawing and design. You’ll also be encouraged to consider how architecture can have a wider impact on everything, from its immediate surroundings and social contexts, right through to the human body. You will also benefit from dedicated studios, master a wealth of industry-grade technology and apparatus, and have the use of our Tracklab virtual reality studio.

In Year 1 you'll be introduced to the main teaching and learning methods used across the course and the facilities available on campus. You'll gain the knowledge to complete and present a simple design programme, and draw on a variety of cultural and technical influences and various techniques of communication. In Year 2, you'll increase your confidence and engagement with the course and its facilities. You'll develop the knowledge to address a reasonably complex design programme with elements of self selection. And the potential for specialised learning and the implications of different choices of direction will become clearer, with personal preferences emerging. In Year 3 you'll gain the depth of knowledge to resolve a complex design programme, and with a substantial amount of self-determined direction, establishing preferences and viewpoints expressed in verbal and written design discourse, within each subject area, and relating subject areas to design. You'll study some topics more generally related to architecture in detail. And you'll also build an appreciation of how architecture can become more significant in today's world. Your communication skills will be enhanced, so that a project can be presented coherently to the public or external professionals.

The majority of our courses require a portfolio and we consider the strength of our applicants’ portfolios, as well as their grades. This means that whilst we have a standard entry criteria of 112 UCAS tariff points (128 for BA Hons Architecture) (64 UCAS points for 4 year courses) and a minimum of four GCSE passes (or equivalent) at grade A*-C and/or 4-9 including English, this should be used as a guide to what we accept. The average tariff that our students achieve is significantly higher than this standard entry criteria but we also occasionally make offers which are lower to students with a strong portfolio, and those who have faced difficulties that have affected their performance and who were expected to achieve higher results. We welcome applicants who are currently studying or have completed A-Levels, Extended Diplomas (BTEC and UAL), Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Access to Higher Education, Scottish Highers, and IB Diploma. We will consider other Level 3 qualifications on an individual basis and we are happy to accept applicants with a combination of Level 3 qualifications.
