Course Summary

Do you aspire to be part of events such as Le Tour de Yorkshire, Food & Drink Festivals, Music Festivals, Literary Festivals, Race for Life or do you want to run a corporate event of your own? If you are well organised, enjoy thinking on your feet and working under pressure then the Event Management FD could be the first step towards a dynamic and exciting career in the events industry. The Event Management FD is a challenging vocational course that will provide ideal preparation for you to pursue a career in the event management, hospitality or conference sectors, and will support your development if you are already working in a business environment that requires you to organise conferences, events, exhibitions and meetings. The course will give you an understanding of a broad range of concepts and techniques, giving you the ability and confidence to communicate effectively and apply skills in any business environment that may be required for an event. This course provides focussed and relevant training to allow complementary development of academic and work skills. The course includes modules that will underpin your industry knowledge by ensuring that specific aspects are addressed and contextualised to the event management sector. Each of these modules will enable you to complete an assignment based on your own place of work. However, if you do not have a job in the event or related industry, you will be encouraged to undertake voluntary work for local or national events. The use of work-related case studies is also possible. You will have the opportunity to gain additional practical learning & professional development by attending a range of local & national events. You may also have the opportunity to gain additional professional Health & Safety and Risk assessment qualification qualifications. The course is taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and presentations, which will be supported through group discussion, presentations by external expert practitioners, individual and group tasks and independent reading and writing. Each 20 credit module is assigned 28 contact hours and you will receive an individual tutorial session each semester. Alongside the contact hours, you will be expected to undertake 10-12 hours (pro-rata for part-time study) of independent study each week, such as reading journal articles and books, undertaking research and preparing for assessments, presentations or examinations. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus in addition to the College’s Specialist Support Centre. Some of the modules are shared with other courses within the Business suite, allowing students to share experience and best practices across a wide range of Businesses. The average class size for this course is 8-10. A Foundation Degree is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and is equal to the first two years of a full BA (Hons) course or a Higher National Diploma. Once you complete your FD, you may then move on to the Business Management in the Service Sector BA (Hons) for a further year.
