This course provides a comprehensive understanding of animal management and will equip you with the necessary knowledge to assess the welfare needs of animals, enable you to acquire practical animal management skills and devise management strategies pertinent to the animal sector. The College’s new state of the art Animal Management Centre, completed in June 2018, has extended our high-quality provision for Animal Management HNC students. The new facilities include a reception area with a large display tank, specialist rooms for fish, invertebrates, nocturnals, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, amphibians, plus quarantine and isolation rooms. The Craven College Animal Management team has excellent links with a wide range of employers. The course will be taught using well integrated practical and theoretical sessions, providing an opportunity for you to experience real-life situations. Teaching and learning will take place through a combination of lectures and seminars providing an opportunity to share knowledge and experience and providing a forum for discussion and debate. In addition to timetabled sessions, 10-12 hours of personal study will be required each week. You will be expected to become resourceful and to take responsibility for your own learning. Independent research, reporting on own reading, one to one guidance and small group discussion will help you progress. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus, in addition to the College’s Specialist Support Centre. The average class size for this course is 10-12. You will have the opportunity to take part in external visits to businesses involved in animal behaviour and welfare. These visits may be optional but may involve extra costs. You will also be encouraged to shadow industry professionals to gain experience of work opportunities in the sector. HNC is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and is the first year of an HND course. The HND will be offered providing there are a sufficient number of students.
