Course Summary

Real estate is undergoing a paradigm shift from its original form and function with technology driven interventions delivering a profound impact as can be seen in the retail and commercial sector. The retail sector is struggling to retain its original form and shape in the high street while the definition of dedicated office space is vanishing rapidly given the ability to perform most activities on the go or in any location. Innovation is the name of the game in the property industry. Coventry University with its vision of "innovative education" is well placed to deliver this imaginative and modern knowledge and practice in the real estate sector. "Creating better futures" can be achieved by remaining relevant to the present with a keen eye for the future; the founding hypothesis for this proposal. The School of Energy, Construction and Environment occupies a special place of pride and position in all the core disciplines of the construction industry with a clear focus on the Built Environment. Land, Property and Real Estate is but a natural extension of the existing suite of courses and competence and precisely complements them within the current and modern context. Real Estate is a sector which promises undiminished growth with 55% of world population (~7.7 billion, 2019) currently living in urban areas, a number expected to go upto 68% by 2050 (United Nations). Even in times of recession certain special and specific demands are placed on real estate professionals. The founding objectives of the course is to specially exploit the strengths of the university and the school while definitely targeting the vast opportunities present in our vicinity and beyond to deliver the intended competitive advantage. Property development and management is a global multi-trillion dollar industry and as such requires visionaries with knowledge and acumen to protect and proliferate the colossal investments. Coventry University as has been its vaunt, intends to deliver just that - the visionaries with the knowledge and acumen to step in and flourish in an industry that has no borders. Staggering numbers reflect the value of real estate in any country. Two physical assets are as yet totally indispensable, vis-à-vis - a house and a place of work. Regardless of the size and specifications, these two immovable assets require the services of a wide variety of specialists to create them. Once created buildings will need to be managed in their original location which is why location plays such a significant part in the life of buildings and the land on which it is situated. It is the management of these physical assets that this course targets; management which demands many a diverse avatars of the real estate and property management professional. The course itself will cover a wide variety of specialist areas ranging from economics (money matters) to construction technology (technical stuff) to law (legal stuff) to planning (spatial and urban expertise) to valuation besides help develop a deep understanding of our commitment to the community, society and the nation at large.
