Course Summary

The course aims to develop you into a confident, competent, safe and capable practitioner who can carry out complex activity in all areas of a hospital Operating Department. This includes the assessment, planning and delivery of individualised care from admission to the department through to the immediate postoperative unit or recovery. The demands placed on ODPs mean that the practitioner is required to take responsibility for managing all aspects of patient care within the department, primarily concerned with supporting and assisting in the care of the patient throughout the perioperative journey. ODPs have a critical role within the operating theatre team and are involved with the maintenance and restoration of the physical and psychological status of the patient. This course aims to equip you with the skills and knowledge to work effectively as an ODP within a team of health and social care professionals. ODPs also work within other areas such as the Emergency Department, Intensive Care and Obstetric Units. There are other opportunities available to enhance your training and become Surgical Care Practitioners or Physicians Assistants (Anaesthesia) with additional postgraduate education and training (additional costs may apply). Coventry University is ranked in the UK’s top 15 in the Guardian University Guide 2020, offering a state-of-the-art Clinical Skills Centre with up-to-date equipment and simulators and excellent career prospects. Our course benefits from exceptionally high levels of staff commitment and outstanding graduate employability, with 100% of our graduates currently in work.
