You’ve likely seen similar courses on your search, but none with the key differences that set ours apart. Firstly, no other degree programme in the UK has embedded the Ocean Literacy (OL) programme (promoted by UNESCO) to such an extent. So much so that we’ve based a first-year module around it, using the seven ocean literacy principles as Assessed Learning Outcomes. Alongside this, we believe the dissemination of marine scientific knowledge is a core attribute. To reflect this, we focus on a programme embedded in science communication. Each year includes a specific module where science education and interpretation, as well as outreach, are not only taught, but form part of your assessment. Pair this with the applied nature of foundation degrees; employability and real-world relevance, and the resulting mixture is at the heart of everything we do. Think of it as an emphasis on building practical skills and survey experience, but underpinned by a strong academic and scientific core. The course is designed to be as practical as possible. You’ll be collecting data, maintaining equipment and publishing your recordings, to build up your applied skillset. Modules that cover biological, chemical and physical oceanography, as well as GIS skills from a marine spatial planning perspective, will develop your experience even further. These are the building blocks needed to become a skilled technician, or to advance your preparation towards a research-related career. Our fantastic campus in the heart of Newquay is unlike any other university experience you will encounter. A small, family feel within walking distance of wild and rugged headland, sheltered coves, freshwater streams, saltmarsh and sprawling estuaries. It’s these collaborations that give our students an edge. Embedding industry-focused, ground-roots conservation work experience into your programme of study is what makes us tick. Perhaps our most important asset is our team of research-active lecturers. Unlike larger universities, you’ll find that student-teacher collaboration is commonplace at our campus.
