FdSc Biosciences is a new Foundation Degree where you'll acquire and demonstrate core knowledge and understanding in the fields of biology and chemistry.
During the first year of FdSc Biosciences, you'll explore the basics of Introductory Chemistry, Biochemistry and Cell Biology – all key areas for anyone who’s aspiring to work within the fields of biology and chemistry. This programme, also gives you an introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology, Molecular and Clinical Genetics and Key Professional Skills modules.
In your final year, you’ll expand your understandings of Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Disease & Immune Response, Biosciences in Practice and Individual Research Project. You’ll also get the option of learning more in-depth about Pharmacology or Environmental Chemistry.
You will learn through practical examples, demonstrations and active practice in workshops, lectures, laboratory experimentation, guest lectures, work placements and visits. Work based learning is rooted in making the course unique and more employable as you reflect on current practices and consider continuous development. You will undertake a broad range of assessments to build a portfolio of experiences from writing academic papers showcasing the industry specific skills you have developed. This programme was designed and consulted with industry professionals in order to maximise your further study and future employment opportunities.
The range of assessments will offer students the chance to build a portfolio of experiences including experimental design, data collection, analysis and reporting, communication techniques, and industry specific skills such as quality assurance.
FdSC Biosciences is a fundamental subject for careers in the science and health sectors, but there are many other routes you can take with this degree, you can go on to becoming an environmental scientist, forensic scientist and academic researcher to name a few.
