City’s MSc (pre-registration) Mental Health Nursing offers you the opportunity to train in one of London’s leading and most well-established departments for nursing education. Our priority is to ensure that you graduate with the skills and knowledge to enter the mental health nursing profession, which can often be a stressful and challenging environment, with confidence.
As a student at City, you will combine theoretical study with clinical experience, working with London's diverse population in leading hospitals and community settings. We will prepare you for all aspects of the profession including supporting people working towards recovery, dealing with crisis and emergency situations, improving the effect of patients’ physical health, detecting deterioration and how to approach, assess and provide the most appropriate care and treatment in differing situations.
Course Details - Modules
The course has three programme stages, which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next programme stage.
- Programme Stage One of the course is 21 weeks and focuses on the underlying foundation concepts and principles associated with nursing practice.
- Programme Stage Two is 33 weeks and will enable you to build upon your previous knowledge and experience so you can develop an ability to deliver person-centred care in different contexts.
- Programme Stage Three is 27 weeks and focuses on encouraging you to develop a coherent systematic, detailed knowledge of adult nursing so that you can lead and influence practice.
Students are expected to complete 40 hours per week during clinical practice, simulated practice and IPE. During the theoretical component of the course, there are a mixture of lectures and small group sessions which may be held between 09.00 -18.00.

Standard Qualification Requirements
Applications are welcome from a wide range of disciplines with lower second class honours (2.2 Hons) degree or above.
Successful applicants will be required to complete a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) claim in order to obtain a place on the course. In addition it is recommended that a Recognition of Prior Practice Learning (RPL) claim is also made prior to entry to the programme otherwise applicants will be required to undertake a further 500 practice hours at the end of the two year programme.
Applicants must have a grade C (4) in GCSE English and Mathematics or an overseas equivalent.
