Course Summary

This course is for students who want a solid grounding in the mathematics discipline, while exploring topics related to finance and actuarial science to open up a huge choice of future career and study options. With an emphasis on applied mathematics, you will be trained in advanced mathematical techniques, economic theory and key financial topics. Finance component on this course is taught by City's Bayes Business School. As a result, this course will particularly suit those wanting to develop the ability to cast and solve real-world problems in a mathematical framework. The degree is also focused on helping you achieve your future ambitions by helping you to develop the highly valued problem-solving and communication skills needed by today’s employers. In addition to this, you can obtain up to four professional exemption recommendations for the Institute of Actuaries. You will be trained in advanced mathematical techniques, economic theory – both micro and macro – and a wide range of finance topics. Become a graduate in demand – our students are highly sought after in financial sector, particularly risk assessment, insurance and statistical finance Master a wide range of mathematical topics and techniques, including computing and computational mathematics, statistics and probability – and how to apply them to real-world problems Develop in-demand expertise in finance and actuarial science, such as financial and investment mathematics and financial reporting.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Assessment is based on examination and coursework. Marks are weighted in a 1:3:6 ratio for the three years of study to produce an overall aggregate. You will be assessed on the following types: - Set exercises or coursework, which you take home and complete with the aid of your notes. - Formal unseen written examinations every year. - Class or online tests. - Group assessments, such as written reports, also form the basis of assessment for some modules. In the third year of your degree, a core module consists of a group project. The group is assessed by a group written report and an individual presentation on the project. Also, a small number of modules require students to give presentations. Year 1 Written examination: 78% ∙ Coursework: 22% Year 2 Written examination: 80% ∙ Coursework: 20% Year 3 Written examination: 70% ∙ Coursework: 30%
