Our Politics and Contemporary History programme situates its analysis of international and domestic politics in terms of the historical development of global society. This programme allows you to specialise in the recent past and to be equipped as a political scientist. It includes British, European, American and African history and politics. With this degree, you will develop your awareness of how our contemporary society, culture and politics have been shaped by historical events and political processes. We draw on developments from the late-nineteenth century to analyse contemporary politics, as well as social, economic and cultural trends.

The degree includes teaching on the following themes: British Political Organization and the Practice of Politics; Political Concepts and Comparative Contexts; Democracy, Human Rights and Security; War Studies; The United States of America: Politics, Identity and Culture; Twentieth and Twenty-First Century British and European History; Africa and the African Diaspora; and Political History. Meanwhile, students receive a solid grounding in the theoretical approaches and research methods in History and Politics, and will have the opportunity to complete an individual research project under the personal supervision of experienced researchers. This modular structure offers sufficient flexibility to allow students to take additional vocational modules, such as the work placement, and to spend a semester or two at one of our partner universities abroad.

The standard entry requirement for this programme is IELTS 6.0 with no element lower than 5.5. However, you can begin your 3-year degree programme with IELTS 5.5. Our International Route allows you to take 4 credit-bearing modules in International English Studies (IES) as part of your first year studies. This means you study 4 modules in your chosen subject and 4 in International English. The IES Modules allow you to focus on personal language development and your use of English as an academic language. Then, at the end of your first year, you’ll have all the necessary language skills to transfer to full study of your main subject. If you have an IELTS score under 5.5 you can still begin a 3-year degree programme with us. In this case we provide a 5 or 10 week intensive Presessional Programme in English language and academic skills. For the 10 week Programme you’ll need IELTS 4.5, and IELTS 5.0 for the 5 week Programme.
