This degree is designed for students wanting to student modern history (1800-2010). It includes British, African, European, and World history, as well as including key thematic approaches: political, military, cultural, social and gender history. The degree is taught at the unique Chichester campus in the city and is supported by a number of relevant museum partnerships. Students aiming for a career in history teaching (primary/secondary) will gain the chance to take a pre-PGCE module in their final year. Typical course content includes: Colonial history, First World War, Second World War, Cold War, Modern British history, Modern European history. You will also be supported through one to one dissertation supervision in an area of your choice.

The standard entry requirement for this programme is IELTS 6.0 with no element lower than 5.5. However, you can begin your 3-year degree programme with IELTS 5.5. Our International Route allows you to take 4 credit-bearing modules in International English Studies (IES) as part of your first year studies. This means you study 4 modules in your chosen subject and 4 in International English. The IES Modules allow you to focus on personal language development and your use of English as an academic language. Then, at the end of your first year, you’ll have all the necessary language skills to transfer to full study of your main subject. If you have an IELTS score under 5.5 you can still begin a 3-year degree programme with us. In this case we provide a 5 or 10 week intensive Presessional Programme in English language and academic skills. For the 10 week Programme you’ll need IELTS 4.5, and IELTS 5.0 for the 5 week Programme.
