This engaging course offers a three-year route to become a secondary school Mathematics teacher.
You will study a range of undergraduate mathematics modules alongside education modules to learn effective ways of teaching mathematics. You will spend 120 days of the course on school placement developing your practice in order to become an inspirational secondary mathematics teacher.

Course Details - Modules
There are four main strands that run through the programme:
1. Study of Mathematics
These undergraduate mathematics modules build on the materials covered at A level and introduce some new fundamental areas of mathematics including calculus, statistical theories and applications, network analysis, machine learning, optimisation and game theory.
2. Education
The modules in this suite are designed to enable you to study and appreciate the effective ways of teaching mathematics, drawing on your and others own experiences of learning. Time is spent looking at the historical background of contemporary theories, debating and analysing their strengths and weaknesses and what this might mean in the classroom for learners.
3. Professional Studies
Professional Studies modules allow you to consider all of the facets that are needed to become an outstanding teacher. It brings together ideas and theories of inclusion, equality and diversity and how to respond as a professional to contemporary issues in education.
4. School Experience
School Experience aims to help you progress skills such as lesson planning and classroom management in order to become an inspirational secondary mathematics teacher. Placements in schools will provide you with distinctive opportunities to develop your professional knowledge and teaching skills. It is designed to enable you to relate to the teachers’ standards, required for the recommended award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This will develop your teaching style and confidence at the heart of the classroom.
Course Details – Assessment Method
Mathematics modules are taught by experienced university lecturers from the undergraduate mathematics team. Education based modules are taught by a core team of education and mathematics education theory specialists, all of whom have a background in teaching.
One of the key strengths of the programme is that all learning is supported by contemporary pedagogical research, theories and discussion within a small class environment. This allows us to really get to know you as individuals, and support you in your journey.
Throughout your degree, modules are delivered in a variety of ways including:
1. Standard module: a single module over 1 semester (usually 15 credits)
2. Individual tutorials: you will have individual sessions for both mathematics and education components of the course.
3. Workshops: workshops are available on extra mathematical topics and on educational issues such as SEND, Mental Health and Behaviour Management.
4. Placements: All of our school placements carry credits and are undertaken in secondary schools from within our Partnership, offering a variety of sociodemographic experiences and total 120 days across the three years of the programme.
