We recognise that many Art students want to specialise from the outset of their degree, focusing the development of skills in one clear discipline area. The expansion of the Textiles area within our programme has allowed students to become highly specialized in the development of textile-based work. Textiles incorporates elements of 2D and 3D practices, links to painting (surface, colour, collage, flat surfaces), as well as sculpture (structural textiles, 3D hangings, mixedmedia), which makes textiles a fascinating area for you to work in. You will be encouraged to learn a varied set of skills and techniques in studio and workshop activity, including weaving, stitch, felt-making, dying, and knitting. Working in textiles allows fine art orientated exploration and interacts with sculpture, painting printmaking and installation work. In the first year students will initially be set a series of research and drawing based activities that will drive the students’ ideas towards a self-directed practice, greater independence, and by the final year, the attainment of a distinctive vision.
Lectures and seminars along with the peer group critique in the studio, support independent, self-directed work. Students will learn to create their own negotiated pattern of work as they move towards an exhibition for their degree show in their final year. We offer you the opportunity to exhibit your work outside of the artOne building. A series of selected work is hung in the general public spaces and provides a professional showcase for your work. As well as these public spaces there is the opportunity to show work in the University’s Otter Gallery. Main Studio and Workshop Skills and Activities will include: Felt-making; Weaving; Embroidery felt-making; Tapestry; Embroidery; Dyeing; Colour and surface.

IELTS (Academic)
5.5
PTE Academic
43.0
If you are an international student and English is not your first language, you can begin your 3-year degree programme with IELTS 5.5.
Our International Route allows you to take 4 credit-bearing modules in International English Studies (IES) as part of your first year studies. This means you study 4 modules in your chosen subject and 4 in International English. The IES Modules allow you to focus on personal language development and your use of English as an academic language. Then, at the end of your first year, you’ll have all the necessary language skills to transfer to full study of your main subject.
If you have an IELTS score under 5.5 you can still begin a 3-year degree programme with us. In this case we provide a 5 or 10 week intensive Presessional Programme in English language and academic skills. For the 10 week Programme you’ll need IELTS 4.5, and IELTS 5.0 for the 5 week Programme.
