Nursing is a hugely rewarding career where you have a real chance to make a difference to people's lives. As part of your training, you can expect to learn new skills and procedures that help patients. You will be taught both on campus and in a variety of practice and simulation settings. You will apply your knowledge gained during your study in the University during placements, which are a key part of your course and will constitute 50% of your university studies, working alongside experienced professionals, learning from practice with the support of your practice supervisor (who will be a registered health professional). The course will offer the opportunity for wide interprofessional learning; the University’s portfolio including provision in social work, social care, childhood studies, psychology, counselling, nutrition, physiology, physiotherapy, sports therapy, biomechanics and public health. Our Nursing degree is being developed with our practice partners, patients and carers and will be accredited against the Nursing & Midwifery Council’s (NMC) 2018 standards, enabling you to be eligible to seek admission to part 1 (Adult) of the NMC register on successful completion of this three-year programme. You will learn how to observe patients and assess their needs, to plan and deliver the most appropriate care for them, and evaluate the results. We will support you in becoming a caring and compassionate professional who delivers skilled, evidence-based care in partnership with patients, families, and communities. In collaboration with health and care providers, this course supports the growth of nursing in the region. Our teaching will meet the NMC code which is: prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety, promote professionalism and trust.

Indicative Modules Year One Stages of Human Development Demonstrate and apply knowledge of human development from conception to death. Health Sciences for Nursing Demonstrate and apply knowledge of body systems and homeostasis, human anatomy and physiology, and biology. Developing as a Professional Nurse Demonstrate the numeracy, literacy, digital and technological skills required to meet the needs of people in your care to ensure safe and effective nursing practice. Mental and Physical Health Conditions Demonstrate and apply knowledge of all commonly encountered mental, physical, behavioural, and cognitive health conditions, medication usage, and treatments. Health Promotion Understand and apply the aims and principles of health promotion, protection and improvement, and the prevention of ill health when engaging with people. Person Centred Care Understand and apply a person-centred approach to nursing care, demonstrating shared assessment, planning, decision making, and goal setting when working with people, their families, communities, and populations of all ages. Practice Learning Safely demonstrate evidence-based practice in all year one skills and procedures undertaken in placement. Year Two Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to act as a role model for others in providing evidence-based nursing care to meet people’s needs. Developing as a Professional Nurse Demonstrate resilience and emotional intelligence and be capable of explaining the rationale that influences your judgments and decisions in routine, complex, and challenging situations. Mental and Physical Health Conditions Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to respond proactively and promptly to signs of deterioration or distress in mental, physical, cognitive, and behavioural health and use this knowledge to make sound clinical decisions. Quality Improvement Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of improvement methodologies, participate in all stages of audit activity, and identify appropriate quality improvement strategies. Person Centred Care Provide and promote non-discriminatory, person-centred, and sensitive care at all times, reflecting on people’s values and beliefs, diverse backgrounds, cultural characteristics, language requirements, needs and preferences, taking account of any need for adjustments. Practice Learning Safely demonstrate evidence-based practice in all year two skills and procedures undertaken in placement. Year Three End of Life Care Identify and assess the needs of people and families for care at the end of life, including requirements for palliative care and decision making related to their treatment and care preferences. Developing as a Professional Nurse Understand the principles of effective leadership, management, group and organisational dynamics, and culture and apply these to team working and decision-making. Person Centred Care in Organisations Identify the implications of current health policy and future policy changes for nursing and other professions and understand the impact of policy changes on the delivery and coordination of care.
