Course Summary

The aim of this programme is to equip those who are looking to enter the profession of editorial photography with the knowledge and skills required. Yr 1 (Higher National Certificate) focuses on the principles, skills and technology of modern editorial photographic practice. Yr 2 (Higher National Diploma) aims to produce career-minded individuals that can enter the editorial sector. The BTEC qualification is designed to meet professional standards, recognised by employers and universities, which develop not only academic skills and abilities, but work readiness skills. Industry practice is at the core of our course and learners will be encouraged to shoot and submit work regularly to editorial media outlets for publication. All learners will become student affiliates of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS). The RPS exists to increase knowledge and understanding of photography and to promote the highest standards of achievement; providing significant resources and opportunities for members to develop their creative practice. After successful completion of the HNC (Year 1), you can ‘top up’ to a HND qualification with another year of study (Year 2). Progression to full honours degree is available with a third year of study at a university. The editorial media and photographic sector is broad covering online, print and broadcast industries which include employed, commercial and independent freelance professional photography. You can also choose to study an extra year to "top up" your qualification to a full honours degree with a third year of study at a university.
