A physician associate is a healthcare professional who works as a member of a medical team under the supervision of a doctor or surgeon in a wide variety of healthcare environments.
Our postgraduate Physician Associate Studies course has been developed in collaboration with our regional healthcare partners, and is delivered by a research-active group of academic staff, supplemented by a variety of Clinicians and Biomedical Scientists from local Hospital Departments.
Our intensive course combines theory, clinical skills and patient contact from the beginning.**
Course Details - Modules
The theory part of the course covers general medicine, and you will spend 1,500 hours on a clinical placement covering: community medicine; general hospital medicine; accident and emergency; mental health; obstetrics and gynaecology; and paediatrics (acute setting).
You will learn through formal lectures, case-based learning, seminars, clinical simulation and the clinical placements.
Course Details – Assessment Method
Assessment will be through coursework, reflective logs, examinations and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). You will sit a national exam at the end of the second year, including a Multiple Choice Question paper and an OSCE.
The course culminates in the Research Dissertation, which will be assessed through your production of two articles in the style of published scientific work.

Standard Qualification Requirements
Applicants should normally have:
- a 2:1 honours degree or above (or accepted equivalent) in life/health sciences
- A lower second class (2:2) (or accepted equivalent) life/health sciences Honours degree may be considered with appropriate experience
- IELTS 7.0 overall, and no less than 6.0 in any band; or TOEFL 88.
- Applicants must apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and Occupational Health check, and register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
- Prior work experience in a healthcare or allied health profession is desirable but not essential
- Acceptance on the course is subject to an assessment interview.
