**Course Overview**
- If you’re curious about how language works, or how to teach English to speakers of other languages, then our English Language and Linguistics course has lots to offer you.
- This is a flexible programme – you get to choose which modules you’d like to study based on your interests and career aspirations.
- We focus on developing your written skills, giving you work experience opportunities, and providing you with an exciting range of modules which you can pick and choose from depending on your career interests.
- There are two pathways – the standard pathway, and the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) route. The TESOL route allows you to gain an internationally recognised teaching qualification, the Trinity Cert TESOL, alongside your degree.

Standard Path Way
Year 1: English Language Workshop (academic writing and employability), English Syntax and Phonology, From Sound to Meaning, Language Variation in Society, Analysing Texts. You also have 1 elective choice module from the following; Language, Gender and Identity, History of English Literature, Writing Identities, A Modern language or BSL, TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages)
Subjects Covered at Year 2 and 3: Framing the News, Language, Mind and Brain, Sociolinguistics, Semantics and Pragmatics, Accents and Dialects, Foundations of English Grammar, History of English, English Morphology, Corpus Linguistics, The Language of Literature, Power in Talk, Discourse and Argumentation, English in Education, Language Pathology and Clinical Linguistics, Forensic Linguistics, English Syntax, English Phonology, Contrastive Linguistics.
TESOL Pathway
