Course Summary

Equine Science and Veterinary Bioscience at IBERS Aberystwyth means studying the biology of a range of animal species in such a way as to provide you with the underpinning veterinary medicine and scientific theory and examples using the horse (including some equine-specific modules) are used where possible. This includes how nutrition, welfare, anatomy and physiology as well as understanding diseases, their diagnosis and control. Students on this course benefit from the superb teaching facilities and modern laboratories. The University has over 1000ha of Farmland and its own Equine Centre that has an Olympic size indoor arena. Students on this course will use our advanced microscopy and bioimaging laboratory. Our location is very much unique to other Universities, we are found on a stunning coastal location, with miles of unspoilt beaches to gallop upon from the Equine Centre. In addition, students on this course will have the opportunity to undertake their BHS exams during their course. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not take the chance to study abroad during your degree? We have exchange agreements with universities in Europe, USA, and elsewhere, so you can apply to spend all or part of your 2nd year studying veterinary biosciences overseas. You will miss Aberystwyth, but you’ll love the new perspectives that international study can bring! Although this course does not provide recognised training for those wishing to practise as a veterinary surgeon, it does, however, provide graduates with a suitable pathway to a veterinary medicine degree programme. Upon completion of this degree, students will be equipped with the core skills that employers are seeking, which makes the transition from campus to career a smoother process. Graduates from IBERS have explored careers in: Research science; Nutritional companies; Pharmaceuticals. Others have progressed and undertaken MSc and PhD qualifications.
