Standard Qualification Requirements

For entry to Cardiff Metropolitan University, all PGCE Secondary applicants must have the following by the date term commences: GCSE Requirements: GCSE grade B/grade 5 or above in English Language, English Literature, Welsh Language (First Language) or Welsh Literature and Mathematics / Mathematics Numeracy (or a standard equivalent). Where an equivalent to a grade B/grade 5 in either English Literature or Welsh Literature is achieved, a minimum of a grade C/grade 4 must be achieved in the corresponding GCSE examination in English or Welsh (First) Language. Applicants who have achieved a D / Grade 4 or above in GCSE (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics on application, will be considered for interview. Students studying to teach in Welsh medium schools will also need a GCSE grade C or above in Welsh (First language). Cardiff Metropolitan University offers an in-house equivalency exam for GCSE English Language and Maths for those applicants with a D grade to meet B grade requirements. A GCSE Science equivalency exam is also offered for those with a D grade in Science. For those applicants who do not have the relevant grade we do accept equivalent qualifications and further information about what is accepted including organisations are on our website. Applicants need to indicate on their application if they are taking a GCSE resit/Equivalency examination. Initial Degree Requirements: 2:2 Honours Degree Whilst it is expected that the content of your degree will contain a significant proportion of the subject in which you wish to train to teach, we do favourably consider applicants whose degrees are in a subject that is closely related. Your application and interview (should you be selected) will be assessed on your potential to meet the QTS level of the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership that relate to subject knowledge, understanding and skills, and the extent to which these can successfully underpin your practice as a teacher of a particular subject, up to and including the teaching of A level and other post-16 curricula. Applications may be considered for certain Secondary subjects from those who have achieved below a 2:2 Honours degree, but where higher qualifications and or relevant experience have been attained, e.g. Masters, PhD.  Please click the following link to find out more about qualification requirements for this course https://www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/education/courses/Pages/Secondary-PGCE.aspx
