Course Summary

The Foundation Degree in Film is an exciting course with a broad vocational base, designed to meet the fast-paced requirements of a creative workplace, particularly in the areas of Film and Television. The course teaches an equal balance of Drama and Documentary production. This enables the learner to have a choice whether they specialize in documentary production or drama production should they want to progress onto the third year at the University of South Wales, and top up their qualification to a full BA(Hons) degree. In the first year you will study six modules: Study Skills, Film Theory and Analysis - this is designed to engage you in critical thinking about films, and prepare you for written assignments. Craft Skills - teaches the basics of the craft of film making from cinematography to sound, to editing and script writing. Writing for Fiction and Documentary - this further develops your skills in writing for the screen. Telling Stories and Dissecting Stories - these are practical modules where you make fiction and documentary films. In the second year you complete another six modules designed to further enhance the skills developed in the first year including: Advanced Craft Skills 1 & 2, Film Analysis 2, Character and Narrative and Truth and Telling. The course is delivered across two sites, City Centre Campus and Cardiff Arts Academy.
