Course Summary

This degree scheme consists of two-thirds Education and one-third Mathematics. In your three years at Aberystwyth, you will study a broad spectrum of education topics, including sociological, psychological and education aspects of the subject; along with that will come exposure to the mathematical language that underpins so much of the modern world, from science, technology and engineering, to finance and commerce. This course is perfect for aspiring teachers, tutors and lecturers with a particular interest in Mathematics. On successful completion of this degree, students are eligible to apply for post-graduate teacher training (PGCE) at Primary level. Also, as long as you meet the entry requirements, you will be guaranteed an interview for Primary PGCE at Aberystwyth. In Education, you will learn about the impact of educational policy on children and schools, how children learn and the place of assessment in the education system. You will be able to create a programme of study reflecting your interests, perhaps including special educational needs, mathematical development, literacy or cultural diversity in education. You will have access to the department’s employability programme, giving you plenty of opportunity to think about life after graduation. In Mathematics you will start by studying core modules in algebra and calculus, with optional modules available in probability, statistics and mathematical analysis. As you progress, you will be able to choose from a wide range of mathematics and statistics modules to suit your own interests. Skills of analysis, communication and group work will fit you for employment in a number of graduate careers in either of your subjects. Your BSc in Mathematics with Education will prepare you for a broad range of employment or training options, including teacher training. Your educational knowledge will help you establish a career as an education administrator, trainer or youth worker. Your mathematical training will prepare you for work in the increasing number of careers where specialist numerical skills and logical and analytical thought are in high demand. Some graduates progress immediately to further study, either research or a post-graduate training course, such as an MA in social work or a post-graduate teaching certificate (PGCE). For aspiring teachers, the balanced combination of the two subjects is a sound basis for either secondary or primary teaching.
