Course Summary

Studying for a BSc in Geography at CCCU will provide you with a gateway to life-long learning about issues that will really matter to our shared future. Guided by the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals you will explore the big issues of the day including: climate change; the threat of over-population; loss of biodiversity; global inequalities; levels of economic development; and global security, - these are only a few of the many issues that will be explored. There is a strong emphasis on field work including regular visits to sites around the local area making your real-world experiences relatable to those of the classroom – exploring a variety of human and physical environments, processes and systems. The emphasis placed on laboratory and generic scientific skills expands the opportunity for you to integrate your observations in the field with a knowledge of biological, chemical and physical processes in the environment - a clear key strength of this curriculum that sets this degree apart from many other geography degrees. Foreign field trips encourage you to explore new landscapes and cultures through the lens of your unique geographical knowledge. Placement options enable you to gain vital employability skills. Over three years you will develop the skills to collect, manipulate, analyse, map and visualise and communicate geographical phenomena independently as you research topics of your own choice, often with specific employment goals in mind. Putting theory into practice, all within an overarching context of the world we live in and the real-world problems we face, means a focus on management, planning and policy is imperative in the latter stages of the degree as you prepare to graduate and move into careers or further learning at MSc or PhD level.
