Do you dream of working in the sport sector as a coach? This two-year foundation degree gives you the right mix of academic theory and workplace experience to help you get ahead in your career.
Using our state-of-the-art Human Performance, Exercise and Wellbeing Centre, you can learn through a hands-on and practical way. This facility brings together teaching, research and enterprise across health, sport, exercise and wellbeing.
**Why study this subject?**
Coaches are the backbone to every successful player and athlete in any sport. They improve technique. Guide through psychological barriers. Rehabilitate after injury. Provide moral support. Study the science behind what makes a successful coach and you’ll learn lifelong skills to help you get the best from people.
**Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?**
When studying at Buckinghamshire New University you will gain a qualification that will demonstrate your skills. Our course also allows you to really understand the theory behind the physiology, psychology and biomechanics of coaching.
Our programme is more than just academic, you can get playing sports or work experience throughout the course either with your current role, a performance pathway or organisations such as Sport for Kids. At Buckinghamshire New University we also have great links with sports organisations – for example, we’re a Swim England National Performance Centre.
**What facilities can I use?**
Whilst studying with us you can take advantage of our extensive sports facilities and activities. A wide range of sports and fitness classes take place in our large, versatile sports space on our High Wycombe Campus. Stretch and relax at Fitness Pilates, work your muscles with Reps and Sets, or squeeze in a quick H.I.I.T workout.
The sports hall has a sprung floor that reduces the impact on ankle, knee and hip joints, and the space can be split so that several activities can take place at once. Specialist matting is available for activities such as judo and cheerleading.
**What will I study?**
Throughout the course, you’ll learn the theory behind key aspects of sport coaching. Then you’ll put that knowledge to use in practical work.
We’ve developed a range of modules to cover topics across every aspect of coaching. Learn about energy and nutrition, biomechanics, even psychology.
You’ll study core topics across the two years. Then in your second year, you’ll have the choice between child development and learning and applied strength and conditioning. This will help you to specialise further, depending on what sort of career you’re interested in.
**How will I be taught and assessed?**
We’ve kept the course varied, with a mixture of practical and academic work. Some classes might need you to build up a portfolio, while others will involve essays or group presentations. You can submit work online, so the course is ideal if you want to work or focus on your performance while finishing off your studies.
