Upon completion of the course you will gain professional registration to the Nursing and Midwifery Council. When studying with us, your education will be delivered locally, and you will also complete a local placement. Not only does this give you an opportunity to live and stay local whilst studying, but it also ensures you will be highly employable upon graduation by the trust where you train. Opportunities for employability across the rest of the UK will also be available due to a current high demand for midwives across the sector. 50% of your time on the course will be spent on a clinical placement and local trusts will provide you with placement areas in a wide range of maternity services. On your local placement with a trust partner, you will gain exposure to a diverse demographic of women, partners and families. You will cover the entire continuum of care, preparing you for the Continuity of Care and Carer model currently being implemented nationally. You will also become skilled in caring for women with and without additional needs and will work in partnership with women, enabling their views, preferences and decisions, helping to strengthen your capabilities. **What facilities can I use?** The course will be taught out of both Aylesbury and Uxbridge campuses, with access to excellent simulation suites on both sites. This includes up-to-date equipment allowing for the simulation of midwifery skills to enable the learner to develop in a safe environment. Simulation is an important aspect of our nursing and healthcare programmes. Students regularly spend time in these areas, to practice technical skills and use the newest technologies, in a safe and supportive environment. We use simulation manikins programmed to act like humans, and ‘moulage’ – the process of applying mock, often gorily realistic injuries for training purposes. We also engage service users in role-play sessions. This allows us to provide realistic scenarios where students can gain experience, exposure and feedback to boost their confidence before going out on placement. Whilst studying with us you will also use our BucksAnywhere web service, which provides access to many of the software applications you use for learning and studying. BucksAnywhere can be used from your own device or from a University owned PC or laptop, from any location. **How will I be taught and assessed?** The course is led by our Associate Professor in Midwifery, who brings with her over 26 years field expertise and 7 plus years in education. As lead midwife for education for Buckinghamshire New University, she is best placed for the development and support of the students in the learning environment and the placement environment. The wider team consists of experienced midwifery lecturers that bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the curriculum, along with clinical educators intricately linked with practice to support the education of our future midwives. Theoretical teaching will consist of a range of lectures, seminars, digital virtual learning and tutorials. Some of the teaching will be face-to-face contact, some will be directed or guided learning and some will be independent learning. Theoretical assessments will include a combination of presentations, essay’s, exams, OSCE’s (Observed Structured Clinical examinations) and Viva’s (oral examinations) to allow for all learners to exceed. Assessment is also 50% practice-based assessment throughout the course, which is conducted by Midwifery supervisors and assessors, with support of academic assessors.

Whilst exact course structure is to be confirmed and subject to validation, the NMC standards (NMC 2019) are at the heart of this curriculum. This ensures that during your time at Buckinghamshire New University you will gain skills that enable you to provide effective, evidence based and person-centred care as a qualified midwife. The degree programme will be delivered over 3 years. The curriculum will also build up your knowledge and depth of normal physiological processes to facilitate pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Upon completion of the course you will be able to optimise normal physiological processes, support safe physical, psychological, social cultural and spiritual situations, work to promote positive outcomes and be able to anticipate and prevent complications. Theoretical components of the course will comprise of (but are not limited to): • Physiological process of pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum period • Caring for women with additional needs • Neonatal Life support • Obstetric emergencies • Anatomy, Physiology and pharmacology • Research methods and application to evidence-based practice • Public health and the wellbeing of all women, including those in vulnerable client groups • Ethics and how these apply to the autonomous midwife practitioner • Equity, cultural awareness and the understanding of health inequalities.
