Further develop your skills and knowledge by studying the one-year Flood and Coastal Engineering BSc top-up after the foundation degree.
This top-up BSc course is for students who progress from the foundation degree in flood and coastal engineering at Brunel. It has been developed in partnership with the Environment Agency to address the growing need for flood engineering professionals in the UK. The course is led by Brunel and co-delivered with HR Wallingford, a world-renowned civil engineering and environmental hydraulics organisation.
You will enhance your knowledge of structural design, geotechnics and how to mitigate risk through environmental assessment and strategic management. This is while developing your skills in hydraulic modelling, flood estimation and engineering design. You’ll be introduced to flood and coastal management and your learning will be focused on protecting communities against flooding. This flood and coastal engineering course will provide you with the skills to enjoy a successful career in flood risk management.
You’ll have access to Brunel’s testing facilities that include hydraulic benches and flumes. In addition, you’ll benefit from the hydraulics testing facility at HR Wallingford, the largest in the UK. Their world-class test facilities include: large flumes; physical modelling laboratories; tsunami generator; and remote controlled river survey boats.
The course is enhanced by a strong professional development programme that runs in parallel with the academic content supported by practical work. You’ll enjoy a series of seminars, workshops, lectures from guest speakers, and site visits. There’s also the opportunity to go to conferences and exhibitions where you’ll network with key water industry professionals.
Unique to this BSc top-up degree in flood and coastal engineering is the residential summer school at HR Wallingford which provides you with a refresh experience midway through the summer break. Here you’ll have the opportunity to experience world-class experimental facilities and contact with senior industry figures. There are challenging team building tasks such as the design, build and testing of your own flood product. Civil engineering site visits are arranged with activities like the setup and positioning of temporary flood defences.
Our flood and coastal engineering course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (representing the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers). A one year full-time course is available for self-funded students..
On successful completion of the course, you’ll have the full educational base to apply for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status. You can also proceed to an MSc degree in engineering to enable you to gain the educational base to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
