Higher National Certificate/Diploma (HNC/D) in Policing and Uniformed Services What is the course about? By 2020, all new entrants to the police force must be qualified to degree level. The new BTEC Higher Nationals in Policing should enable qualification holders to top up to a BA Honours Degree in Policing or related subject area or enter employment as a Special Constable, Police Volunteer, Police Staff (civilian roles.). What modules are covered? Subjects you will study in year one include: •Unit 1: Small-scale Research Project in Policing •Unit 2: Criminal Law •Unit 3: Police and the Criminal Justice System •Unit 4: Equality and Diversity in the Police Service •Unit 5: Roads Policing •Unit 6: Technology and the Police Services •Unit 7: Criminology – Practical Application for the Police Service •Unit 8: Command and Control It is expected that students will undertake work experience at the end of year one continuing in the second year of study, for a minimum period of 6 months. How long does it last? HNC - Full Time 1 Year HND - Full Time 2 Years (3 days per week). Start date 25/09/2019 Who is the course suitable for? This course is ideally for those wanting a career in policing but will also be useful for those wanting to enter other public sector organisations as an Officer (e.g Military Police, Border Force, Prison Service or other uniformed and non-uniformed services). What grades do I need? You will need to have successfully completed a Level 3 course (e.g. BTEC National at Level 3, A-levels). GCSE English and maths at grade C/4. You will need to apply through UCAS for this course and you will need 48 UCAS points. However, there are flexible entry requirements for mature applicants. How is the course assessed? You will be assessed continuously through course work in different formats, e.g. presentations, reports, essays, timed assessments and physical observations in different policing areas. Are there any extra costs? The course does include visits to external locations (e.g. Surrey Police Headquarters, Mount Brown) but these costs are kept to a minimum.
