Course Summary

From climate change to extreme poverty, society faces a series of urgent challenges. This course provides you with an understanding of the political world that created these crises, along with the creative and digital skills required to contribute towards solutions. This course has your future employability at its heart. You’ll gain experience working on live briefs from campaign groups, undertake a placement at a non-profit or community organisation, and design and carry out a political campaign. You will also develop the digital skills required to be at the forefront of change, including filmmaking, podcasting, web design, creative writing and journalism. You can choose from a wide range of options, enabling you to study the political world in depth, learning about global challenges, gender issues, environmentalism and activism. You will graduate as an experienced debater and an independent researcher, with a knowledge of how to practically apply your skills. As well as learning from a team of committed lecturers, you will benefit from hearing from visiting national and international experts.

Course Details - Modules

The course adopts a student-led and problem-orientated approach to learning. Students work in groups, with the support of a lecturer, to understand and find solutions to a range of global challenges, developing their team working and independent research skills. They will learn a range of digital and creative skills, including filmmaking, podcasts and website design, so that they can communicate their research to a wider public. These projects are collated on an online portfolio so that graduates can demonstrate their skill sets to future employers. The course is outwardly focussed and informed by live briefs developed with external partners from the local and international community. Students undertake a placement with a not for profit organisation and work with a third sector group to run a political campaign. Course Details – Assessment Method

The course uses a diverse range of assessment methods designed to help you develop skills for political action, employment and further academic study. As well as traditional academic essays, seminar assessments, exams and your independent dissertation, you will also be submitting assessments such as blog posts, presenting podcasts, making films and vlogs, and delivering presentations. You will be taught how to communicate your ideas to a range of audiences in different formats and supported in the preparation of these assessments. There are also a range of non-assessed formative tasks throughout which are designed to contribute to your learning and help you practice these skills alongside comprehensive academic skills teaching.

The fees listed here are for full-time courses beginning in the academic year 2022-23. Please note that the £13,873 international fee is for classroom based courses. For lab based courses a higher fee of £14,892 applies. EU students will be charged international fees unless they have settled status awarded by the UK Government's Settlement Scheme. Further tuition fees are payable for each subsequent year of study and are subject to an annual increase of no more than 5% or RPI (whichever is the greater). The annual increase for UK/EU students, who are subject to regulated fees, will increase no more than the statutory maximum fee. The tuition fee you have to pay depends on a number of factors including the kind of course you take, and whether you study full-time or part-time. If you are studying part-time you will normally be charged on a pro rata basis depending on the number of modules you take. If your course includes a sandwich year option you will pay a reduced fee during this year; £1,370 for home students and £2,120 for international students.
