This programme provides you with the opportunity to study a range of modules with a strong Primary Education focus currently offered by the McMillan Faculty of Education. Successful completion of the course will enable you to enter a wide variety of education roles, including those outside of the school context. This one year, full-time route is Stage Three of the degree course. To study on this course you must have completed Stage One and Stage Two. This is an ideal course if you wish to eventually progress into a career in teaching. It has the advantage of offering you the opportunity to study educational issues before choosing to apply for a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) course. In addition, students can continue to work whilst studying. The course requires a one day per week commitment to attend taught sessions in College over three terms. Alternatively there is a part time study option available whereby students study over 4 terms, resulting in a less pressured course over a longer time span. Apart from the day per week taught session, the remainder of the study time is yours to organise as best fits with family, work, and your other commitments, making the course an ideal choice for students with busy life styles. During the course, you will also complete a dissertation on a subject of your choice related to education. The modules are taught by different tutors, contributing taught sessions about their specialist subjects. This is an ideal course if you wish to eventually progress into a career in teaching. It has the advantage of offering you the opportunity to study educational issues before choosing to apply for a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)course. Your future career will be built on a solid foundation of the highest academic standards of teaching and learning – as many of our teaching staff are experts in their fields. The modules are taught by different tutors, contributing taught sessions about their specialist subjects.

The modules include: Developing Language - will give you the opportunity to understand the key skills of supporting, managing and develop an understanding of language in an educational context. Contemporary Issues in Maths and Science Education - presents a coherent approach to your own subject knowledge in primary science and mathematics education with an academic and professional focus. Foundation subjects and RE - has been designed to develop your knowledge, understanding and experience of the teaching and learning of the following subjects: Art and Design, Design and Technology, Music, Geography, History and Religious Education. Personal Philosophy of Education - will enable you to develop understanding of your current key skill levels and the ways in which a range of support systems and practices can assist you whilst on this course and in your future career development. Plus a Dissertation focussing on an area of interest to you. Students attend College one day per week and tutorial sessions with their programme leader will be built into the timetable.

Entry requirements: a Foundation Degree, HND, or Diploma of Higher Education in an education related subject and appropriate substantial Primary school experience during the last three years, eg as a Teaching Assistant. On-going placement in an educational setting is desirable. Mature/non-standard candidates will be invited to attend for interview and may be required to complete a written assessment.
