Course Summary

The part-time Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing is aimed at those who are currently working in an optical practice, who wish to work towards becoming a fully qualified and registered Dispensing Optician. The FdSc (part-time) in Ophthalmic Dispensing will provide you with the skills to achieve Fellowship of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians and become a General Optical Council Registered Dispensing Optician. During this course you will study up to level 5 and receive a foundation degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing on successful completion. In addition to your foundation degree, successful completion of your final qualifying exams will allow you to use the suffix FBDO (Fellow of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians) The course benefits from almost 80 years of combined academic experience of the staff team. All staff on the Ophthalmic Dispensing programme team are qualified Dispensing Opticians. In addition to this, members of the Ophthalmic Dispensing programme team are employed as ABDO external examiners of both theory and practical examinations and this experience of working with the Professional Body is reflected in the currency of the programme. You will need to register with both the GOC and ABDO as a student registrant during the period of your study. As part of their studies, students will be offered the opportunity to visit an optical manufacturer to complete Case Record 51 - a compulsory part of their pre-registration period. This is organised by the College where students gain valuable experience in all aspects of lens manufacture and glazing.

Course Details - Modules

The course is structured over a three-year, part-time day release programme, allowing flexibility in terms of employment, placement and independent study. You must register with the General Optical Council (GOC) and the Association of Dispensing Opticians (ABDO). There are additional fees for the ABDO professional examinations. Level 4 modules: Communication Skills Introduction to Ophthalmic Lenses Ocular Anatomy Optics Practical Ophthalmic Dispensing Mathematics for Dispensing Opticians Prescription Analysis. Level 5 modules: Introduction to Contact Lenses Introduction to Low Vision Ophthalmic Lenses Practical Dispensing Skills Professional Practice and Pathology Visual Optics Vocational Ophthalmic Dispensing.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Modules will be assessed by a range of methods including: practical reports, written course work and timed examinations. Assessed grades are subject to external moderation. A wide range of teaching and learning strategies are used throughout the programme including the following: small group discussions; seminars, tutorials and practical sessions; group work; self-directed learning; independent and group projects; lectures; VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) based exercises; presentations; workshops. Students will be expected to engage in in reflective activity at all levels of the programme, learning how to engage in reflection on and in practice. They will additionally be expected to undertake a wide range of personal reading from sources provided on the VLE, Moodle and through library based research. As part of their studies, students will visit an optical manufacturer to complete Case Record 51 - a compulsory part of their pre-registration period. This is organised by the College where students are able to gain valuable experience in all aspects of lens manufacture and glazing and will take place in their second year. Full-time students are encouraged to do a work placement in Year 1 to give invaluable practice experience which underpins the theoretical modules delivered at this level. If students have difficulty finding a placement, tutors will endeavour to place the student in a suitable optical practice. Non-assessed practical workshops timetabled at each level encourage professionalism and allow the student to prepare for the Professional Practical Qualifying examinations with ABDO. On successful completion of these examinations, graduates will be awarded the Fellowship of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (FBDO).

All candidates wishing to study via the part-time route must be in full-time employment with a GOC (General Optical Council) registered Optician. Applications from candidates who do not meet the academic criteria for entry but have experience in the subject area are welcomed. These applicants will follow relevant RPEL (Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning) procedures.
