This is a creatively demanding course delivered in a traditional Art School environment by academics and industry professionals who have a wide range of relevant industry experience and knowledge. The course provides high quality technical and creative support and provides access to industry standard facilities. It is intended that, by the end of the course you will be ready to engage with dynamic nature of the creative industries. Designed to enable graduates to be well placed to launch a career as a modern Graphic Designer, the course has been specifically designed to develop expertise in design and creativity. It focuses on developing independent and creative thinking. It is challenging artistically and practically and prepares you for the interdisciplinary nature of the design industry. The course offers a range of experiences in design, illustration and communications through a variety of media. We aim to interrelate concepts where possible, for example static to moving images, or traditional to modern technology. This creates a catalyst to reconsider visual language. The overall aims of the course are: to provide a broad based education in graphic design, illustration and digital media; to develop an awareness and understanding of the creative potential of contemporary professional practice in the field of graphic design, illustration and digital media; and to develop an understanding of the different cultural, historical and commercial contexts within which graphic design, illustration and digital media professionals operate today.

Course Details - Modules

Level 4: Level Four is intensive and exploratory, in which we aim to give a broad-based introduction to your education in Graphic Design. We will study the culture of studio practice, and engage with a range of creative and analytical opportunities. Modules include: Graphic Projects; Graphic Media Techniques; Professional Development; Design Contexts. Level 5: In Level Five, we place emphasis on your individual direction with further exploration of contextual and professional awareness. External live projects and national competition briefs are available where appropriate. Modules include: Advanced Graphic Projects; Advanced Graphic Media Techniques; Design Matters (Historical and Contemporary Issues) Level 6: The final level requires you to propose an appropriate personal programme of work which can evolve continually throughout the year; this could include set, live and competition briefs. Modules include: Final Major Project; Design Focus (Dissertation).

Course Details – Assessment Method

This course combines a number of learning methods through a programme of integrated study and related problem-solving assignments. We provide a supportive environment within which learning strategies are designed to be student centred and to develop individual learning through a series of negotiated briefs and assignments. Over the duration of the course, you will take control of the development of your own personal learning increasingly. In addition to module teaching staff, you will be advised and supported throughout by a Personal Tutor. Our teaching methods focus on meeting your professional, creative and conceptual development needs. Teaching and learning is directed towards meeting your individual needs and is centred on supporting you in developing your own solutions to design and communication problems. In addition to module teaching staff, you will be advised and supported throughout by a Personal Tutor. You will be assessed by a range of formative and summative assessments, which allow you to continue strengthening your skills as a Graphic Designer. The course is based both on practical and theoretical study, which will be reflected in the method of assessment; practical work will typically be assessed through the presentation of a body of work in portfolio or exhibition form, whilst written work will be presents in essays, reports or journals.

As part of the application process, you will be required to attend an interview to which you should bring a portfolio of your work. Applications are encouraged though non-traditional routes. An appropriate level of study will be identified through a portfolio presentation and evidence of professional practice experience at interview. If you have already completed a Foundation degree or HND, you will be considered for direct entry to the appropriate level of the degree course.
