This course will give you not just the creative edge you need to get work in the graphic design industry but also the hard edged, practical skills and experience you need to make that all-important jump into the workplace. The course is tailored to match the kinds of jobs that are available, both in the region and nationally by offering the student relevant employable knowledge and expertise. The HNC in Graphic Design aims to train students not only to think creatively and interpret a brief with flair and originality but also to build a good looking practical portfolio of work that demonstrates the skill set and the mind-set that employers want from new designers. Depending on numbers, there will be an option for progression on to a HND at the college. What jobs can I get? Graphic Designer, Art Director, Photo Manipulator, Type setter, Working for Magazines, Music Venues, Newspapers, Corporate Logodesign Agencies and Freelance. We also aim to offer input on project management in Graphic Design to train students with those essential client facing skills along with the knowledge needed to set up as a freelance or small business. You will study a wide range of digital and traditional skills and techniques, including design for print, screen-based interactive design, publishing, typography, illustration, packaging and branding, delivered by an experienced graphics team. You will benefit from ample contact time with specialist staff, small studio sizes and industry-standard equipment. Complementing the practical work is a programme of workshops, lectures, visiting speakers, live projects and work-based experience, encouraging you to grow as a designer who can demonstrate the skills and original, critical thinking that employers need. The programme of study has been developed by professionals who have held senior posts at national creative companies and have also worked for high calibre regional employers in the creative sector. It is taught by an experienced teaching team who are all practicing creatives in their own rights, enabling students to receive the relevant knowledge and expertise needed in today’s fast-paced creative industries The course offers great potential for those students seeking a practical and cost effective alternative to expensive University courses in Graphic Design.
