Course Summary

The Foundation Degree in Floristry Design is specifically designed to provide an interdisciplinary programme of study. It is focused on the development of student knowledge and understanding of a broad range of Floristry skills and techniques supported with essential theoretical underpinning knowledge. The programme is designed to produce graduates with a firm understanding of essential commercial floristry skills and the ability to develop these skills further, becoming confident with contemporary techniques and a wide range of approaches to floristry design. The modules are designed to enable the students to experience a real-life work environment for a ‘learn whilst doing’ approach and allowing the development of enterprise and entrepreneurial skills. It will introduce the students to working on live projects, working with a client or client brief, or competition briefs and utilisation of the college’s floristry shop to support the students to gain specific and commercial skills required by employers or to find suitable careers within the industry which demand higher levels of professionalism. The specialised work experience modules will increase and promote the practical competence and confidence of the students within a commercial environment. These modules are developed to be inclusive of a range of floristry work experience that could include floristry competitions where applicable the development of freelance work designed to expand the learning experience whilst keeping the experience relevant to the individual, ensuring that the qualification reflects flexibility within the industry whilst meeting industry demands. Within the floristry industry it is essential that students gain a wide range of skills and abilities to adapt to this changing environment. The programme focuses on building generic and transferable skills to ensure students are able to progress into the work place demonstrating confidence.
