The FdA Fashion & Clothing Design programme is designed to meet the needs of students wanting to pursue a career in fashion. It is delivered in a learning environment where creativity, experimentation and a practical approach are key to skills development, providing students with a range of academic and practical skills required to enter the fashion industry. Delivered in an inspirational rural location yet within easy reach of city environments, students experience innovation and collaboration through individual and group projects whilst being part of a small, diverse cohort where emphasis is placed on supporting the development of inspired, creative designers.
The programme provides a curriculum which develops students’ practical knowledge of the principles of the fashion industry, including research, design and manufacture processes along with academic understanding and transferable skills appropriate to the level of the award. Students will develop creative design ability and technical skills utilising a range of vocationally relevant visual, written and verbal techniques to communicate and present their ideas. This includes practical experiences such as illustration and drawing, visual research, pattern cutting and draping fabric, creative experimentation, technical skills development, and work experience and portfolio development, providing a strong platform for evidencing employable skills.
Where possible, visits to exhibitions, major cities and other places of interest feature within the delivery of modules to support the development of initial creative inspiration and to enhance the students’ subject knowledge. To further support the vocational nature of a Foundation Degree the students have opportunities to engage with industry and work on ‘live’ projects and industry-led competitions to gain first-hand experience of design process and delivery within a collaborative working environment. There is a strong emphasis on developing the student as an individual, encouraging self-direction and independent lines of enquiry, thereby producing highly creative, self-motivated individuals who will be able to work towards a defined career within industry or continue with a further Higher Education pathway by the end of the programme.
