Course Summary

Bioinformatics is an exciting and emerging field of biology. It involves an understanding of biology and the analysis of large data sets. Study extensive human biology content while developing your statistical, mathematical and computational skills. This will allow you to create, store and scrutinise complex data sets. We've designed our Bioinformatics programme for those with a passion for human biology and data analytics. In your first year, you'll gain an in-depth knowledge of human biology and professional research skills. In your second and third year, you'll specialise your studies. We'll help you to develop your data analysis, maths and statistics skills. You'll also learn to collect, model and analyse biological data. We are a vibrant team of academic and technical staff. We'll interact with you during and after your studies to help you achieve your ambitions. While studying with us you'll develop your scientific knowledge and employability. We focus on practical, transferable and multidisciplinary skills. This all enables you to work in a wide variety of employment areas. Take your learning to the next level with placements. Gain hands-on experience both at the University and in local industrial laboratories. We'll support you to organise short placements throughout your studies. Alternatively, you can choose to take part in a year-long external placement in industry. Our Applied Biosciences courses have distinct award titles but these titles represent a specialism, not a separate degree course. The Applied Biosciences suite will share all first year modules with the existing Biomedical Science degree and have the same entry criteria. You will be able to swap between courses at the end of your first year, but once you start your second year, you will need to remain on your chosen specialist route. Once you have studied all subjects in your first year, you can make an informed choice about which area you enjoy and would like to specialise in.
