Course Summary

This Diploma of Higher Education, 2 year full time award is aimed at those individuals who wish to develop their interest in sport science with a robust grounding in scientific principles relevant to the coaching industry. Sport can be a complex environment, with athletes needing support to address the way in which the athlete is managed to maximise performance, when required, in a range of very diverse environments. This approach to sport science support may vary considerably with influencing factors such as gender, ability, age, location, health, and availability of professional services. The branches of support are many and varied, covering elements such as nutrition, health and disease, and the influence of other aspects such as behaviour and ethics. This course aims to provide the student with a thorough understanding of possible contributors to produce performance, from a micro- to macro-level – such understanding enabling the individual to contribute positively to athletic performance. Developing a thorough scientific understanding, combined with the ability to apply that knowledge practically, will enable the individual to take a proactive role in the industry following graduation. Writtle’s approach of ‘science into practice’ is never more evident than in this course and the development of excellent communication skills will be a key graduate attribute for students who have undertaken this award.
